What the Job Involves
Water damage restoration is the work of getting water out of a building, drying what is left behind, and repairing what could not be saved. A good crew does it in that order. They stop the source, pull standing water with truck mounted or portable extractors, then set air movers and dehumidifiers and measure moisture every day until the materials reach a dry standard.
The drying is the part people underestimate. Carpet can look dry on top while the pad and the subfloor under it hold water for a week. Drywall wicks water up past the visible stain line. That hidden moisture is what turns a clean water leak into a mold job, usually somewhere between 24 and 48 hours after the leak starts.
What You Can Do Yourself
DIY with care
A small, clean water spill caught early is a fair DIY job with a wet vacuum, fans and a rented dehumidifier. Once water has soaked carpet pad, run under flooring or sat inside a wall for a day, you need moisture meters and commercial drying equipment to know when it is really dry.
