Waterville sits on the west bank of the Kennebec River in central Maine, with Winslow across the water. The river has flooded low ground in past spring melts and big storms, and ice jams can back water up quickly. Heavy rain on deep snow in December 2023 sent the Kennebec over its banks along much of its length. River water that enters a house is always contaminated, so treat anything it soaked as a loss.
