Walla Walla sits in a valley at the foot of the Blue Mountains, where creeks fed by mountain snow and rain run right through town. Mill Creek flows through downtown in a concrete channel. In February 2020, warm rain on mountain snow sent Mill Creek and the Walla Walla River near or over their banks, and many homes in the valley and in Milton-Freewater flooded. Know your flood zone and keep a separate flood policy if you live near a creek.
Summers are hot and dry, and winters bring cold snaps that can drop well below freezing. Pipes in outside walls, crawlspaces and garages can split in a hard freeze.
