What Makes Vero Beach Different
Vero Beach sits on Florida’s Treasure Coast, split between the mainland and a barrier island by the Indian River Lagoon. Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne both made landfall just south of here in September 2004, three weeks apart, and tore roofs and soaked homes across Indian River County. Wind driven rain gets under shingles and tiles and around windows, and the damage often shows up days later.
Homes on the barrier island face surge from the ocean and the lagoon, and a standard homeowners policy does not cover that water. Flood insurance is a separate policy and worth having anywhere near the water. On the mainland, many homes back onto canals and retention ponds that rise in heavy summer rain.
Most homes are block on slabs, from older ranch homes in town to large newer homes on the island and in gated communities. Heat and humidity last most of the year, so mold can grow on wet drywall within 24 to 48 hours. Many homes sit empty in summer. Turn off the main water valve before you leave and set the air conditioning to keep humidity down.

Checking a License in Vero Beach

Ask for the contractor license number, and for mold work ask for a mold remediator license. For testing, hire a separately licensed mold assessor. Look up every license with the department before you sign. For the restoration side of the work, ask whether the technicians hold industry certification in water damage and mold remediation, and ask for proof of liability and workers compensation insurance.
