Tallahassee is known for its tall oaks and pines, and in a storm those trees come down on roofs. Hurricane Hermine in 2016 left much of the city without power, and on May 10, 2024, tornadoes tore through the city and knocked down trees across town. Tarp any opening the same day, because rain through a damaged roof soaks insulation and drywall fast.
Heat and humidity last most of the year. Wet drywall and carpet pad can grow mold within 24 to 48 hours, so drying has to start the same day. Air conditioners run almost nonstop, and a clogged condensate line or a rusted drain pan can soak a ceiling quietly. Heavy summer downpours flood low streets and yards.
Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. Homes south of the city near the Gulf face storm surge, and long power outages stop sump pumps, dehumidifiers and air conditioning all at once. Never run a generator in a garage or near a window, because carbon monoxide kills quietly.
