South Bend sits on the St. Joseph River, and lake effect snow off Lake Michigan can pile up fast here. In February 2018, heavy rain on melting snow sent the St. Joseph River to some of its highest levels on record, flooding homes and basements in South Bend, Mishawaka and Elkhart. Spring melt and heavy summer storms can still overwhelm storm drains and sewers.
