Sierra Vista sits high on the desert below the Huachuca Mountains. The air is dry most of the year, but monsoon storms from about July to September bring sudden heavy rain, hail and wind. Water runs fast off the mountains and through washes, and it can flood streets, yards and homes in minutes.
Wildfire is a real threat along the foothills. In 2011, a wildfire in the Huachuca Mountains burned homes in the Hereford area. After a fire, burned slopes shed water and mud in the next monsoon, so homes below burn scars face a higher flood risk for years.
