Sandusky sits on Sandusky Bay along the south shore of Lake Erie. Many older buildings downtown are made of local limestone, and many homes near the bay are close to the water table. Basements take water in wet springs, and homes on low ground near the shore feel it first when the lake is high.
Lake Erie hit record high water levels in 2019. Strong winds across the lake can push water toward shore and into low streets and marinas. Heavy summer storms add to it, and storm sewers can back up through floor drains. Flood insurance is a separate policy from homeowners coverage, so check your flood zone if you live near the bay or the lake.
