San Marcos and New Braunfels sit where the Texas Hill Country meets the flatter land to the east, in a part of the state often called Flash Flood Alley. Thin soil over limestone sheds rain fast, and creeks and rivers can rise many feet in an hour. The Memorial Day flood of 2015 on the Blanco River destroyed homes in Wimberley and flooded neighborhoods in San Marcos.
The Comal, Guadalupe, San Marcos and Blanco rivers all run through the area, and many homes sit close to the water.
