Rutland sits in the Otter Creek valley between the Green Mountains and the Taconic hills. Steep brooks come down from the mountains into town, and heavy rain can turn them into fast floods. Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011 washed out roads and damaged homes across the Rutland area. Floodwater is always contaminated, and a standard homeowners policy does not cover it.
