Rome sits where the Etowah and Oostanaula rivers join to form the Coosa, in the hills of northwest Georgia. Downtown is protected by levees because the rivers have flooded the city many times. Homes on low ground near any of the three rivers, and near the creeks that feed them, can still take water after days of steady rain.
Hills rise all around the city, and many homes are built into slopes with a basement on the low side. Rain that runs downhill toward the house finds its way through basement walls and window wells. Floodwater from outside is always contaminated, so pull out wet carpet, pad and drywall that it touched. Spring storms also bring high wind and the odd tornado.
