Quincy sits on bluffs above the Mississippi River, and most of the city stands above the floodplain. The low ground along the river and across it in Missouri does not. In the Great Flood of 1993, a levee broke at West Quincy, flooded the Missouri side and closed the bridge into town. Floodwater from outside is always contaminated, and a standard homeowners policy does not cover it.
Quincy is known for its old brick and stone homes, many built in the 1800s. Old limestone and brick basements take water through the walls in heavy rain, and old pipes and drains can crack or back up. A basement that smells musty every spring is telling you water is getting in.
