What Makes the Quad Cities Different

The Mississippi River runs between Iowa and Illinois here, and it rises every spring as snow melts upstream. In 2019 the river reached a record crest at Davenport, and a temporary flood barrier failed and sent water into downtown streets and buildings. Davenport has no permanent floodwall along much of its riverfront, so low areas near the river rely on temporary defenses.
