Pueblo sits on the Arkansas River where it leaves the mountains for the plains. In June 1921, the river flooded the city and destroyed much of downtown. The river was later moved and now runs between levees. Heavy summer storms can still flood low streets and basements, and Fountain Creek can rise fast in a big storm.
