Martinsburg is the county seat of Berkeley County in the Eastern Panhandle, in a valley that sits on limestone. That ground is karst, full of cracks, springs and sinkholes, so water can move under a yard in ways you cannot see and come up through a basement floor. Tuscarora Creek runs through downtown, and Opequon Creek winds along the east side of the county.
The city is old, with brick homes and stone foundations near its railroad core, and newer subdivisions have spread out quickly as more people move in.
