What Makes Lubbock Different
Lubbock is dry and windy, high on the South Plains. Spring and early summer bring severe thunderstorms with large hail, high winds and the chance of tornadoes. Hail can crack shingles and damage roofs without an obvious leak, and the water shows up later as a stained ceiling or wet attic insulation. Photograph the roof and gutters after every big storm.
The land is very flat, and rain drains into low basins called playa lakes rather than rivers. A heavy storm can flood streets and low lots quickly, and homes near a playa can take water when it fills. Dust storms can push fine dirt through gaps around windows and doors and into HVAC systems.
Winters bring hard freezes and the occasional ice storm. The February 2021 winter storm froze pipes across Texas, and pipes in attics, exterior walls and garages are most at risk. Most homes are slab on grade, so a leak under the slab can spread before you see it. Many older homes were built before 1978, so test for lead paint before sanding.

Checking a License in Lubbock
Texas licenses mold work through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. For mold jobs of 25 contiguous square feet or more, ask for a state licensed mold assessor to write the plan and a separate state licensed mold remediation contractor to do the cleanup, because Texas does not let the same company do both on one project. Look up both license numbers on the department’s website before you sign.
Texas has no statewide license for general contractors, so for rebuild work ask for proof of liability insurance and check with your city about permits. Plumbers are licensed by the state, so a slab leak or burst pipe repair should be done by a licensed plumber. For the drying and cleanup itself, ask whether the technicians hold industry certification in water damage or mold remediation.
