Joplin knows what a tornado can do. On May 22, 2011, an EF5 tornado cut across the city and destroyed thousands of homes. Spring still brings tornadoes, large hail and straight line wind. After a storm, tarp broken roofs and windows the same day, and photograph the damage before cleanup starts.
Heavy rain comes fast, and Shoal Creek and Turkey Creek rise quickly. Many older homes have basements that take on water in wet springs, so a working sump pump with a battery backup matters. Ice storms and hard freezes in winter split pipes in exterior walls and crawlspaces.
The area sits in an old lead and zinc mining district that reaches into Kansas and Oklahoma. Mine waste left lead in the soil in parts of the region, and older homes also have lead paint.
