Johnstown sits in a narrow valley where the Stonycreek and Little Conemaugh rivers meet to form the Conemaugh. The city is known for the Johnstown Flood of 1889, and it flooded badly again in 1936 and in July 1977. Heavy rain still runs off the steep hills fast, so homes near the rivers and creeks need a plan before the next storm.
Many homes are built into hillsides, with old stone or block basements that seep in wet seasons and snowmelt.
