The Columbia River Gorge changes fast from west to east. Hood River gets far more rain and snow than The Dalles, which sits in dry country about 20 miles upriver. Both towns share the same strong wind that funnels through the Gorge, and winter east wind can bring freezing rain and ice storms that coat roofs, trees and power lines. Ice can bring down limbs, crush gutters and cut power for days.
