What Makes Glenwood Springs, Colorado Different
Glenwood Springs sits where the Roaring Fork River meets the Colorado River, at the west end of Glenwood Canyon. Steep slopes rise on every side, and summer thunderstorms can send mud and rock down the gullies above town. After the Grizzly Creek Fire burned through Glenwood Canyon in August 2020, debris flows off the burn scar closed Interstate 70 in the canyon for days in July 2021.
Fire is a familiar part of life here. The South Canyon Fire burned on Storm King Mountain just west of town in July 1994, and the Coal Seam Fire burned homes in West Glenwood in June 2002. Smoke and soot keep damaging surfaces after the fire is out, so clean residue from counters, fixtures and electronics soon and change furnace filters after a smoky stretch.
Winters are cold but milder than in the high mountain towns nearby, and freeze and thaw cycles crack pipes in crawlspaces and outside walls. Both rivers rise with spring snowmelt, so homes on low ground should watch their basements in May and June.
