What Makes the Imperial Valley Different
The Imperial Valley is one of the hottest places in the country, and much of it sits below sea level. Air conditioners and evaporative coolers run for months. A leaking cooler line, a clogged condensate drain or a failed water heater can soak walls and floors, and water hidden in a wall can still grow mold in a dry climate.
Rain is rare, but summer thunderstorms and the remains of tropical storms can drop a lot of water fast on hard, flat ground. Streets and low yards flood because the water has nowhere to go. Dust storms push fine dirt into attics, vents and window tracks.
The valley sits on active faults. In April 2010, a large earthquake centered in Baja California damaged buildings in Calexico and across the valley. After any strong quake, check for gas smells and leaking water lines before you turn anything back on, and have cracked foundations and chimneys looked at.
