Crestview sits on high ground in north Okaloosa County, about 25 miles inland from the Gulf. Hurricanes lose some strength inland but still bring hours of wind and heavy rain. Hurricane Ivan in 2004 brought down trees and damaged roofs across the Florida Panhandle, and many homes here took wind driven rain through lifted shingles and broken windows.
The Shoal River and the Yellow River run near town, and heavy tropical rain can raise them and the creeks that feed them.
