Cedar City sits at about 5,800 feet at the mouth of Cedar Canyon, where the high desert meets the mountains. Winters bring real snow and cold nights, unlike the low desert to the south. Pipes in garages, crawlspaces and outside walls can freeze, and a frozen pipe often leaks only when it thaws.
Coal Creek runs out of the canyon and through town. A summer monsoon storm in the mountains can send a flash flood down the creek and the washes with little warning, carrying mud and debris. Never drive into moving water. Spring snowmelt and rain on snow can push water into basements through cracks and window wells.
