The Connecticut shoreline takes the brunt of coastal storms. Irene in 2011 and Sandy in 2012 pushed surge into shoreline homes from Fairfield to Branford, and nor’easters still flood low streets near the water. Floodwater from outside is contaminated, and a standard homeowners policy does not cover it, so flood insurance is worth checking if you live near the coast or a river.
Winters bring heavy wet snow, ice dams and frozen pipes. Pipes in outside walls, porches and unheated basements split in deep cold, and meltwater backs up under shingles on homes with thin attic insulation. Spring rain raises groundwater, and older basements seep along the base of the wall.
Much of the housing in Bridgeport, New Haven and the older towns was built long before 1978, including many two and three family homes.
