Brattleboro sits where Whetstone Brook meets the Connecticut River, in the hills of southeastern Vermont. Tropical Storm Irene in August 2011 sent Whetstone Brook through the heart of town, flooding homes and businesses along its banks. Brook and river floodwater is contaminated, so drywall, insulation and carpet it touched should be removed, not just dried.
Winters are cold and snowy, and many homes here are old, with fieldstone or brick foundations, plaster walls and pipes that run through outside walls. A hard freeze can split those pipes in a night. Ice dams form on roofs that lose heat into the attic, and meltwater can run down inside walls for days before it shows. Air sealing and insulation in the attic stop most ice dams.
Much of the housing was built long before 1978, so lead paint is common, and older homes may have asbestos in pipe wrap, flooring or siding.
