What Makes Binghamton Different
Binghamton sits where the Chenango River meets the Susquehanna, in a narrow valley between steep hills. The rivers flooded the area badly in June 2006 and again in September 2011, when the remains of Tropical Storm Lee pushed the Susquehanna to record levels. River floodwater is always contaminated, so soaked drywall, insulation and carpet should come out rather than be dried in place. A standard homeowners policy does not cover flood.
Winters are long, cloudy and snowy. Ice dams form on older homes with little attic insulation, and pipes in outside walls and unheated spaces freeze in hard cold. Spring snowmelt and heavy rain raise groundwater and push water into basements, so a sump pump with a battery backup is worth having.
Much of the housing in the Triple Cities was built long before 1978, with basements, plaster walls, lead paint and old pipe wrap that may contain asbestos. Test before you tear anything out, and remember that mold jobs over 10 square feet in New York need licensed workers.
